National Museum Complex, Phase I
Sofia, Bulgaria
THE BRIEF
Phase 1 of the National Museum Complex followed Bulgaria’s entry into the European Union, bringing together the country’s key art collections in Sofia’s historic centre. Any new intervention needed to nestle alongside protected historic structures without imitating or dominating them. The facade was critical in balancing heritage context with contemporary performance.
Strategy
We established a restrained facade strategy using stone, steel, and glass to balance permanence, lightness, and transparency. Steel stick systems enabled long spans and fine profiles, while integrated shading and material selection supported durability, comfort, and daylight performance.
RESULT
The completed museum feels settled within its surroundings. The new additions are unmistakably contemporary, yet sit comfortably within Sofia’s historic fabric.
